Yangyang Song-i Festival
Gangwon-do Holds Song-i Mushroom Festival in Autumn

Since 1997 the Yangyang Local Authority has arranged a song-i (mushrooms growing under pine trees) festival in the autumn every year. This year it is scheduled to run from September 30 to October 4 for Koreans and from September 24 to October 8 for foreigners. This festival has provided the participants with a good chance to observe how the special mushrooms grow and to collect them in the Seorak mountains. The following side events have also been arranged: song-i cuisine, jogging on mountain paths, experiencing a tteokmaeul (rice cake village), and catching and sampling anchovies.

Goesan Clean Pepper Festival
Festival for Special Local Product

Peppers are cultivated in all regions of Korea. Good quality peppers, however, can be produced only in certain areas: they should have a climate suitable for the crop, and the soil should not drain too easily. Goesan in Chungbuk-do Province is such an area. Situated in an area 250m above sea level, it is very clean, and it is sunny many days, and has a large diurnal temperature range. Also the soil there holds water long enough for pepper plants to thrive. Goesan peppers are regarded very highly throughout the country.
Usually the peppers are harvested in late August, and the Goesan Local Authority arranges a festival called the ‘Goesan Clean Pepper Festival’ in that period. At this festival the main event is an exhibition and sampling event for foods made using Goesan peppers. And many side events are arranged, including pepper-picking, a quiz about peppers, food-making using peppers, face-painting, and dyeing using peppers. There is also a marathon competition, and for foreign visitors such events as kimchi-making and making seasoning with peppers are also arranged.
