Consumers are becoming increasingly interested in eco-friendly, healthy, handmade sausages opposed to common mass-produced ones. As the expectations of consumers regarding food safety rise, the food production methods change as well. Peace Village, a social welfare foundation has recently started exporting handmade sausages with no artificial colors, preservatives, sodium nitrite, or other additives. The sausages are made with pork from pigs raised on the company’s farms without any antibiotics.

The CEO of Peace Village, Lee Kui-kyung Lee, said, "Other sausages on the market use additives with chemical ingredients to enhance the taste, but we are making sausages as mothers would for their children. The pigs are raised without antibiotics, and all other ingredients, such as pepper, garlic, and mushrooms, are safe and natural." She added, "I am proud to say that we put together pork from pigs grown in the clean environment of Jeju Island and vegetable ingredients grown by disabled people to make products I would give to my own family."
The social welfare foundation Peace Village is a social enterprise with the mission of supplying consumers with healthy food and enriching the lives of severely disabled people. Located in Seogwipo, a part of Jeju island with a pristine environment, it employs 26 disabled workers who make pork cutlets, steak, fermented meat products as well as handmade sausages and ham.
The products are of premium quality and supplied to five-star hotels, schools serving eco-friendly food, eco-friendly stores, Hanaro Mart, and Hyundai Department Store. The most popular among their products are homemade sausage and ham.
Outstanding Taste and Nutrition of Products Made in Highly Sanitary Conditions
These are high-value added products made in highly sanitary conditions from ingredients that are Jeju specialties, such as black pork, and eco-friendly natural materials grown on the island, such as dried herbs and fresh vegetables. Peace Village sells them under the Jejumam brand and strictly adheres to the principle of the "5 no's": no preservatives, no colorings, no MSG, no sodium nitrite, and no fillers.
The products are recognized for their excellent taste, nutrition, and safety comparable to those of Iberico Jamon (a type of cured ham made from black pigs raised on wild acorns in the Iberico region of Spain) and Frankfurt sausages (which are made of pure beef or pork without artificial seasonings or color fixer agents and boast four centuries of tradition).

Entering the World Stage with Export of Ham and Sausages to Hong Kong
Peace Village exported its products for the first time in August 2016 with the shipment of US$ 3,000 worth of ham and sausages to Hong Kong. Through this and subsequent shipments in April and May 2017, the company has been gradually increasing its export volume. Hong Kong consumers appreciate the taste, nutrition and safety of the products. Nowadays, sales of Peace Village are rapidly increasing via Hong Kong home shopping channels and online malls where they are advertised as highly nutritious, delicious, and made from eco-friendly ingredients.
Lee said, "The differences between our products and other sausages—in addition to being made from non-antibiotic pork—are that we only use the meat of pigs slaughtered a day or less before and that we reduce the amount of fat in our products to the minimum for consumers concerned about their weight.” She hopes that export to Hong Kong helps Peace Village to enter the markets of Europe, Southeast Asia, Japan, and beyond and the Jejumam brand gains worldwide popularity.
