Thanks to the popularity of Hallyu (Korean culture wave), it is not difficult these days to see ASEAN people enjoying Korean cuisine and food products.
Interest in Korean food is rising in Indonesia where the regional office of aT (Jakarta) is located. In this issue, the status of Korean food in Indonesia is assessed by Rubina Winnw Maranda (21) who studies Korean language at the University of Indonesia in Jakarta.
1. Do you often buy Korean food products?
Of course. I cannot remember exactly when I started enjoyed Korean food, but I am sure, at least since high school. Many of my friends were big fans of K-pop, and I became interested in Korean culture as well. At first, I occasionally bought Korean food products I saw in Korean TV dramas out of curiosity. Now, however, I buy them regularly because I love the taste and they are easily available in stores, from large supermarkets to convenience stores.
2. What are your favorite Korean food products?
Buldak-bokkeum-myeon (ramen with spicy chicken flavor) and Milkis (sweet, carbonated beverage made with milk). They are bosom buddies. Few local Indonesian brands offer ramen as spicy as the Korean one, so Korean spicy ramen is very popular here.
Most of my friends love spicy Korean ramen. Everyone knows about it, even if they do not learn the Korean language or know about the Korean culture. Seasoned Korean seaweed, snacks, and ice-cream are also popular.
Japchae (glass noodles with sautéed vegetables) and tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) are some of the most popular Korean dishes in Indonesia.
It seems that going to Korean restaurants is a craze among Indonesian young people and office workers. I often go to Korean restaurants and have Korean food; japchae and tteokbokki are always on my list.
3. Where can the ASEAN people, including Indonesians, get information about K-Food?
Visit www.facebook.com/TasteLoveKFOOD/ or www.instagram.com/tasteoflovekfood/.
They post news on Korean food and recently released Korean food products and other related information such as reviews. The aT office in Jakarta updates news frequently.
