Showcasing the Ultimate Sweetness, Handmade Chocolate PiesKangdongoh Cake Co., Ltd. Targets the Chinese and American Markets

We usually associate the taste of chocolate pie with the chewiness of marshmallow and the sweetness of chocolate. The chocolate pies of Kangdongoh Cake Co., Ltd are different in that their emphasis is on the softness of cream, the refreshing flavor of strawberry jam, and the richness of chocolate. This differentiation strategy has been successful; in Jeonju City of North Jeolla Province, you can often see a long queue of tourists waiting to buy these chocolate pies.

The Kangdongoh chocolate pies are made by hand, not by machine. The two main types of products are PoongNyun Bakery Handmade Chocolate Pies and PoongNyun Bakery Handmade White Chocolate Pies. The former is renowned as the “king of sweetness” letting you relish the sweet yet refreshing flavor. The latter is a combination of cocoa and white chocolate that delivers a soft, rich flavor.

The products are exported to the US, the home to chocolate pies. Kang Dong-oh, the CEO of Kangdongoh Cake Co., Ltd, said, "Chocolate pies are originally from the US but no longer produced there." He added, "We have exported about US$50,000 worth of chocolate pies to the US and sent sample products to buyers in Chinese cities of Qingdao, Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, and Hangzhou." Mr. Kang anticipates that by mid-February, based on buyer response, he will be able to roughly estimate the export scale to China.

Haiwodami—A Savory Snack Made of Seaweed and Rice—Is Just as Popular
Kangdongoh Cake Co., Ltd is also actively exporting its seaweed snacks. The product’s name, “Haiwodami,” stands for “a delicious pastry containing a lot of seaweed and rice.” In fact, this product is made by inserting layers of rice dough between sheets of seaweed and then grilling it directly on a fire.

A recipient of the Minister’s Award given by the Korean Ministry of Food, Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, Haiwodami is recognized as an excellent product in Korea. Prior to the outbreak of MERS in 2015, its sales overseas reached KRW 100 million monthly.

Haiwodami comes in three basic flavors—mild, salty, and spicy. In addition, there are premium products with special ingredients, such as Premium Haiwodami Almond, Premium Haiwodami Strawberry, Premium Haiwodami Cheese, and Premium Haiwodami Choco.

Mr. Kang said, "Our products receive excellent evaluations in the US for their reasonable price and high quality. We export not only to the US but also to Thailand, Singapore, and other countries.”

This Year’s Export Goal of US$1 Million
Kangdongoh Cake Co., Ltd plans to export US$ 1 million worth of chocolate pies and seaweed snacks this year. Mr. Kang shares his values, saying, "When a mother cooks at home, she doesn’t work in haste but rather puts in all her heart. Likewise, we strive to make products consistently and wholeheartedly.” He adds, "Every day, we have 40 employees make about 20,000 handmade chocolate pies. To achieve the export target of US$ 1 million, we will do our best to offer products that consumers can trust."
