Leading Export Organization of Cymbidium, GreenGaon,
Gives Priority to Quality and Is Well Received by the Chinese
The peak season for export of Korean cymbidiums is the time of the lunar New Year’s festival in China. As the festival approaches, many Chinese want to buy cymbidiums as gifts. The reason is the timeworn belief among Chinese people that cymbidium is a flower of noble women and, if it is brought to a home, it will bring the household luck for the entire year. GreenGaon Co., Ltd., a representative Korean cymbidium exporter, is busy shipping cymbidiums to China ahead of the Lunar New Year.
Mr. Kim Suk-ha, CEO of Green-Gaon, says, “From planting seeds to harvesting, it takes three years to cultivate cymbidium but the exporting period is just three months - from November to January. In these three months, Korean farmers and exporters focus their efforts on sorting, packing, and shipping to offer to Chinese consumers the best quality cymbidiums matching their taste.”
Praise for Excellent Quality from Chinese Buyers…Yellow and Red Cymbidiums Are Most Popular with the Chinese
GreenGaon receives the supply of cymbidiums through a cultivation contract with the farms in Gangwon, South Gyeongsang, South Chung-cheong, and South Jeolla Provinces. It has been exporting the flowers to China since the early 2000s, for over ten years. The cymbidiums of GreenGaon are well-known among Chinese buyers for the high quality. The blossoms of their flowers are large, the color is clear and vivid, and the flower stalks are thick, straight, and long. Furthermore, the smoothly curved leaves add charm to these fancy flowers.
Mr. Kim also explains, “Most Chinese consumers prefer yellow and red colored cymbidiums because the yellow color symbolizes gold and red stands for honor in China. Softer colors are popular in big Chinese cities whereas people in smaller towns of the Chinese inland prefer rich, primary colors. So we have to customize the shipments according to the tastes of local consumers.”
Sales Promotion to Be Held in Thailand Early This Year…Plans to Make Inroads into Southeast Asia
GreenGaon has recently been designated by the Korean government as a Leading Export Organization of Cymbidium, so this year the company is planning to expand its exports. Its main goal is to establish a robust export base in cooperation with cymbidium farms and other Korean exporters. This goal is summarized in the slogan: “Ensuring the Best Quality, Securing a Stable Supply, and Expanding the Export Base.”
The leading exporter also intends to start advancing into the Southeast Asian market in earnest. For this reason, GreenGaon will soon hold a sales promotion for Korean cymbidium in Thailand.
“Korean Cymbidium Farms Are The Best in the Cultivation Techniques of Cymbidiums”
In your opinion, what is the biggest merit of Korean cymbidium?
The exceptional cultivation techniques. Compared to other flowers, cymbidium requires higher-level cultivation techniques such as temperature control, water and nutrition supply, and so on. If blossoming starts too early or too late, the elaborate efforts invested in cultivating the plants for three years may come to nothing. But Korean cymbidium farms are the best in cultivation techniques. In particular, Korean farmers have no rivals around the world when it comes to controlling the blossoming season.
GreenGaon has been designated as a leading export organization of cymbidium.
It encourages us to make greater efforts to expand the exports of Korean cymbidiums. I believe quality improvement is the top priority. And the key to this is organizing the farms into one system. If we cooperate with each other, we can secure a stable supply and uniform quality.
What export plans do you have for this year?
Until the end of January, we will focus on the export of cymbidiums to China, where our flowers are sold under the brand “多美” (many and beauty). We think there is a big potential to advance into Southeast Asian countries. Through a sales promotion in Thailand, we will check the response of local consumers and conduct market research for the proper export season, pricing, target consumers, and so on.
