Actively Exported Overseas
Have you heard about sanyang wild ginseng? It is the wild ginseng naturally grown in the mountains after farmers plant the seeds. Generally, most of us are familiar with the ginseng cultivated in the fields. The main ingredient for red ginseng products, which are so popular as healthy foods with overseas consumers, is ginseng grown in the fields. Famous Korean processed red ginseng brands, including Cheong-Kwan-Jang and Hansamin, also use this type of ginseng for their products.Sanyang wild ginseng is grown naturally, in the shade of trees, so it is similar to wild ginseng in terms of growing conditions. Accordingly, the cultivation period is longer than that of general ginseng. It takes seven to 15 years on average. That is why the cultivation of sanyang wild ginseng is dubbed the “aesthetics of waiting.” The differences between ginseng, sanyang wild ginseng, and wild ginseng are briefly summarized in the table below.
Chunji Farmers’ Association First Developed a Sanyang Wild Ginseng Processing Technique in the Early 2000s
The effects of sanyang wild ginseng are as good as those of wild ginseng because both types of ginseng have a similar growing environment - they grow in the mountains. Consuming sanyang wild ginseng steadily brings many benefits to health such as suppressing the propagation of cancer cells, improving immunity, improving liver function, recovery after fatigue, and so on.
Sanyang wild ginseng is rich in saponin. It has 10 times more saponin than that in regular ginseng, and four to five times more than the amount of saponin in red ginseng. Nevertheless, it took a long time before the first processed products using sanyang wild ginseng came out. The reasons are the difficulty of getting a harvest in large quantities and more complicated processing techniques than for the general ginseng. Processed sanyang wild ginseng products were first developed in the early 2000s under the brand name Cheonhyangwon, which belongs to the Chunji Farmers Association (CFA).
The association is located in Andong City of North Gyeong-sang Province.

From early on I have had an aspiration to promote Korean sanyang wild ginseng and its excellent benefits to foreign people. For overseas consumers who look for premium healthy foods, we have recently released sanyang wild ginseng ko (paste), and sanyang wild ginseng extract. Currently, CFA holds the largest number of patented formulas related to processing techniques for sanyang wild ginseng.”
Exploring Overseas Markets since the Late 2000s…Soon Entering Hong Kong, the Center of Worldwide Ginseng Trade
CFA’s processed sanyang wild ginseng product brand, Cheonhyangwon has been exported to overseas markets - the US, Japan, Taiwan, China, and India - since the late 2000’s. The brand is playing an important role in increasing the value of Korean sanyang wild ginseng abroad.
The flagship products are bottled beverage, extract, and ko. Cheonhyangwon ko, in particular, is becoming popular overseas as a premium healthy food. It is made with only natural ingredients - roots of eight to 10 year-old sanyang wild ginseng, honey, and royal jelly. In the US, it is sold at the whopping price of USD$3,000 (the product’s weight is 1.1kg). The association will soon start exports to the Hong Kong market, which is the center of ginseng trade worldwide. CFA will export its products to Hong Kong under the new brand Cheonhyang. It will feature two products - Cheonhyang Extract and Cheonhyang Gold. CFA has already signed an export contract (about USD$900,000) with a Hong Kong buyer. The exports are expected to increase depending on the response of the local consumers.

What are the main characteristics of Cheon-hyangwon?
We cultivate san-yang wild ginseng organically. No agricultural chemicals or fertilizers are used. We also employ a production traceability system for sanyang wild ginseng, so we are confident in the food safety and credibility of our products. The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) of the US approved registration of our processed sanyang wild ginseng products. I have no doubts about the superior quality of Cheonhyangwon products.
What made possible exports of Cheonhyangwon to the Hong Kong Market?
We succeeded in concluding an export contract with a Hong Kong buyer during the largest Korean food trade fair “Buy Korean Food 2013,” which was held last May. The buyer was interested in Cheonhyangwon products beforehand, so he made an offer first. Thanks to this contract, our products will be supplied to local high-end entertainment facilities. By entering Hong Kong, we plan to find a way into the Chinese premium food market. We will promote Korean processed sanyang wild ginseng products to China’s higher-income group as a highly functional, healthy food.
You have a USD$89 million export goal for Korean sanyang wild ginseng.
In Korea, there are 7,000 farmers who cultivate sanyang wild ginseng. Currently, only CFA is exporting Korean sanyang wild ginseng products overseas, but I expect the number of people recognizing the value of sanyang wild ginseng to increase over time. The future of the Korean sanyang wild ginseng export industry depends on the way the infrastructure is built and how overseas marketing is carried out. CFA will play the role of a locomotive for the development of the Korean sanyang wild ginseng export industry.
