What word comes first to the minds of Koreans when they think of curry, mayonnaise and ketchup? Most probably they will think of the company “Ottogi.” Ever since Ottogi Co., Ltd. was established in 1969, it has been growing as a food enterprise contributing to improving the dietary habits of Koreans by pursuing “better quality, more nutrition, and more advanced foods.?” Under this slogan, the company, step by step, developed an assortment of products. For example, they released a curry product in 1969, soup products in 1970, ketchup in 1971, and mayonnaise in 1972. All of above products were produced in Korea for the first time and now, 40 years later, they are still very popular among Korean consumers.






The Oldest Steady Seller, Curry

Old soldiers never die and do not fade away. The very first product developed by Ottogi Co., Ltd. is still No. 1 in the curry field. What’s the secret? The secret of the popularity is in the healthy ingredients: vegetables, meat, turmeric, bay leaves, phellinus, and so on. What’s more, it is easy to cook and the price is low. The best selling of the company’s curry brands is Bekse Curry. It contains over 50 percent more turmeric (the main ingredient of curry), than other curry products on the market. About 20 million packages of Bekse Curry have been sold since the product came out in 2003.

Ottogi Co., Ltd. launched mayonnaise in June of 1972. The company developed the product on its own, expecting that the demand for such products would increase as the diet of Koreans was becoming more and more westernized. The demand for mayonnaise rose proportionately to the popularity of salads, and Ottogi Co., Ltd. was able to get an 80 percent share of the domestic market. In the last 40 years, about 1 million tons of Ottogi mayonnaise have been sold.
Ottogi Co., Ltd. is still launching various product lines, continuously researching and developing upgraded products. In 1984, the company launched “Gold Mayonnaise,” taking into account that consumers are fond of the flavor of sesame. In 2003, they released “1/2 Half-Mayo,” in which the amount of oil was reduced to half. A year later, Ottogi started selling “Non-Chol Mayo,” which had no cholesterol content, and a year after that “Olive-Oil Mayo,” which is made with pure, high-quality olive oil.

Ottogi Co., Ltd. boasts production of about 30 products that have the largest market share in their field. Daring to repeat abroad its success in the domestic market, the company is proactively trying to enter foreign markets.
As the first step in its endeavor, Ottogi Co., Ltd. established Tumbler Food Corporation in Jiangsu, China in 1994. They also built a subsidiary in New Zealand in 1997 to obtain the ingredients in the clean natural environment. Furthermore, the company established OTTEX MEXICO in 2001 and OTTOGI AMERICA (in the US) in 2005, to export its products directly to North America.
The company started exporting instant noodles and curry to the Americas in 1988. Currently, Ottogi products are supplied to about 30 nations, including the US, and countries of Europe, Oceania, and Africa. Since 1996, the company started exporting in earnest Ottogi mayonnaise to Russia and this venture earns it KRW 50 billion a year. Despite the presence in the Russian market of other South Korean, foreign, and Russian mayonnaise brands at the time the business was launched, the Ottogi brand mayonnaise, easily distinguished by its yellow cap, has quickly become the most preferred brand.
Ottogi Co., Ltd. is planning to maintain its reputation through its unique sales mechanism, top quality, and by developing the new products that can satisfy customers’ tastes. The company will continue pioneering foreign markets to become an essential enterprise both in Korea and other nations.
