The Invention of Dong Suh Food Co., Ltd., the World’s First Instant Packet Mixed Coffee
Ranking No.1 in Korean Coffee Market with Its “Maxim” Brand
New Item, Ice Tea “Tio,” Is Prepared to Break Through
into the World Market
Like in many other countries, coffee is very popular in Korea. Many types of coffee are offered to the Korean consumers - Americano, cafe latte, cafe mocha, espresso, and so on - but unquestionably, the No.1 in popularity are mixed coffee products (Koreans call them “coffee mix”). These are instant packet products made with an amount of instant coffee, cream, and sugar for just one serving. The first mixed coffee product was invented by the Korean company Dong Suh Food Co., Ltd. in December, 1976. With the mixed coffee, all that’s needed to have a cup of delicious coffee is to put the contents of the stick-shaped packet in a cup of hot water. The mixed coffee has become indispensable in the life of Koreans: they drink it not only at home and in the office, but also outside, when camping, hiking, and so on. Foreigners like the coffee mix, too. It is a bestseller as a souvenir from Korea.
Kim Yu-na’s Coffee with Milk Is Delicious
Maxim, a brand of Dong Suh Food Co., Ltd., ranks No.1 in the Korean coffee market. It sells like hot cakes. Last year, 299 Maxim coffee mixes were sold every second, making it total 25.84 million sticks sold in a day.
Among several types of Maxim coffee mixes, Maxim White Gold is one of the most popular products. Kim Yu-na, the Olympic gold medalist in figure skating, appeared in the advertisement for Maxim White Gold. Since then, many Koreans started calling the product “Yu-na’s coffee.” The campaign helped to increase the product’s already high popularity. Maxim White Gold contains milk, which makes the coffee taste soft but retain the original coffee taste and redolence. The secret is using Colombian coffee beans, SPR (specialized profile roasting), and 40 years of know-how. For consideration of consumers’ health, the product is made with xylose sugar, which is absorbed in the body in reduced quantities as compared to regular sugar.
The Smallest Cafe in the World, KANU
Kanu, a combination of the words “cafe” or “coffee” and “new,” is another brand name of Dong Suh Food Co., Ltd. What aspects make Kanu new? According to the staff of Dong Suh Food Co., Ltd., “It is a new concept of instant coffee. It takes the best of both the instant and brewed coffee. With Kanu, you can have the cake and eat it, too.” Kanu is made with coffee powder extracted at a low temperature in a short time and very finely ground coffee beans. For this reason, you can find coffee grounds at the bottom of your cup, like after drinking Americano at a coffee shop.
Silk Road? Now Prima Road!
Prima, a vegetable-based coffee creamer, harmonizes the bitter, sour, and astringent tastes of coffee, and a little acid contained in it neutralizes the coffee. Since it is purely vegetable-based (made of coconut palm), it tastes neat and light. Noteworthyly, the product was specially developed by Dong Suh Food Co., Ltd. Its high quality has been recognized around the world, and the item is currently exported to 24 countries, including the US, Japan, Austria, New Zealand, China, Russia, and countries in Southeast Asia and Latin America. As of 2011, the exports of Prima reached USD$49 million, which is a huge amount, considering the unit price.
While the first exports of Prima were to Southeast Asia - Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Singapore - the product has recently become popular in Japan. Japan’s representative company specializing in coffee, AGF, will import 36,500 tons of Prima during the period of eight years. The CIS zone, which includes Russia and Central Asia, are the main importers of Prima. According to the Dong Suh Food Co., Ltd., “Not only has Prima been approved by the USFDA, but it is also the only vegetable creamer in Korea that received the HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) certification.”
