Egg Markets in
Including Hong Kong
Hong Kong currently imports about US$120 million-worth of fresh eggs a year and this amount is increasing. The majority of imported eggs come from China, the US, and Thailand. Inexpensive and mass marketed, they mostly hold the low-price market. But the importers often face major problems with the freshness and quality of these eggs. Japanese fresh eggs had dominated the premium market until recently. However, anxiety about the safety of Japanese food after the nuclear incident last March has led many consumers to reconsider their choices.
In this environment, fresh Korean eggs are coming into the spotlight in Hong Kong as more competitively priced than the Japanese eggs, while still being trustworthy in freshness and food safety. Exported overseas since 2009, Korean fresh eggs are now starting to expand their export volume and pioneer into Southeast Asian markets such as Hong Kong. Cheonggyewon Inc., a leading exporter of fresh Korean eggs, is receiving a lot of attention at home and abroad.
Cheonggyewon Inc. is actively tapping the fresh egg markets in Hong Kong and Singapore. The company runs three large-scale fresh egg farms in Gyeonggi-do - in Icheon, Yeoju, and Anseong - and one in Chuncheongbuk-do - the Chungju area. The annual production of fresh eggs is 250 million. All manufacturing facilities and items have obtained certifications for HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) and environment-friendly agricultural products, so food safety is not a matter of concern. Producing “100% zero-defect fresh eggs” is the Cheonggyewon’s greatest advantage. The company has been able to achieve this by sticking to three principles: no antibiotics, no artificial dyes, and no spawning catalysts. What’s more, the entire distribution process for fresh eggs, from production to exports, is carried out in the Cold Chain System. This way, the fresh eggs of Cheonggyewon Inc. can be distributed for a period of up to three months after they leave the factory.
“Three-Zero : Principle” : No Antibiotics, No Artificial Dyes, No Spawning Catalysts
Obtained HACCP and Eco-Friendly Certifications
Can Be Distributed for Up to Three Months through Cold Chain System
According to Han Man-eung, President of Cheonggyewon Inc., “freshness is very important in fresh egg distribution. We check the quality of the egg whites and the yolk with regular random sampling every day. All fresh eggs for export go through thorough quarantine inspections by the authorized Korean inspection agency, QIA (Animal, Plant, and Fisheries Quarantine and Inspection Agency). So our fresh eggs have no problems with food safety.”
Last November, Cheonggyewon Inc. held a major promotional event with the Hong Kong branch of aT (Korea Agro-Fisheries Trade Corp.) in large distribution companies of Hong Kong - ParknShop and JUSCO. As local buyers were breaking fresh eggs from the US, China, and Cheonggyewon - to check and compare their freshness - they became increasingly interested in the eggs produced by Cheonggyewon. After the event, the company was swamped with inquiries for exclusive contracts. To promote fresh Korean eggs to Hong Kong consumers, Cheonggye-won Inc. uses images on the packages of the Korean giwa (traditional roof tiles) and taegeuk (national symbol). This helped the company to receive a favorable evaluation from local shoppers who like Hanryu (Korean culture wave). The price of Cheonggye-won’s fresh eggs in Hong Kong is about HK$25 for 10 eggs.
Cheonggyewon Inc. plans to export fresh eggs in the amount of US$20 million to the markets of Hong Kong and Singapore this year. Cheonggyewon Inc.’s biggest current goal is entering into the premium fresh egg market of Southeast Asia by supplying fresh eggs to high-class hotels and restaurants, while continuing sales to large distributors. The company plans to capitalize on the long distribution period and make inroads into other markets as well - those in the UAE and other countries in the Middle East, Russia, and Canada.
