Nurungji is a popular Korean snack. It is made of scorched grains such as rice, barley, and beans. When rice is cooked in the Korean traditional cooking pot gamasott, a thin crust of scorched rice usually forms at the bottom of the pot. The crust is called “nurungji.” In the olden days, there was little food, not to mention snacks, so many Koreans enjoyed eating this crust as a snack. But even now, when there is plenty of food, Koreans still love nurungji because nothing can replace its crispy taste. Also, if cooked into porridge, nurungji becomes soft and assists digestion. The Korean company “KOREA RICE BIO INC.” has been producing the Korean traditional snack nurungji for less than two years, but in spite of being on the market for such a short time, the product has captivated domestic and foreign buyers with its unique taste of a traditional nurungji snack.

Providing Differentiated Service: “Made-to-order” Ensures Freshness of the Product

“Rice Well” is the brand name of the nurungji products made by KOREA RICE BIO INC. Jeong Yong-su, the president of the company, created this name to place emphasis on the main ingredient of the product. “Rice well” is produced with fully-grown Korean rice of high quality and excellent taste. To make the snack taste perfect, the rice is polished just before it is made into nurungji. The company’s policy is to never accumulate stock of the product, so that the snack has a great crispy taste. For this reason, “Rice Well” is made only after an order has come in. With this policy, consumers in the US, for example, can enjoy fresh “Rice Well” just 40 days from the date of production, even though the product can be stored for one year.

Achieving Crispy Taste with Special Know-how

Crispiness is what attracts consumers to “Rice Well.” The secret of the taste is the processing system that uses brass sheets. Since olden times, people in the East have used brass to make dishes because of the outstanding qualities that brass has: bactericidal effect, high heat conductivity, and the ability to react to agricultural pesticides and pathogenic bacteria. These advantages also make it an ideal tool for cooking nurungji. Using brass sheets, the snack can be cooked over a low heat and scorched to the desired extent. The method also allows production of thin nurungji, so even people with weak teeth can eat it. The product contains no chemical additives or preservatives. Only the healthy additives are used for “Rice Well”: acanthopanax, brown rice, and turmeric. Depending on these sub-ingredients, the product comes in a variety of tastes, which consumers can choose from.

Simple, Practical Packaging and Pretty Design

Not only the taste, but the packaging is also flawless. KOREA RICE BIO INC. produces “Rice Well” in several sizes (150g, 180g, 240g, 500g, 2kg, 4kg), each packaged in an upright zipper bag. The consumers can carry the products with them anywhere and anytime - as a simple breakfast substitute for a business person or as a snack to munch on during a trip. Even the smaller details - such as a see-through clear part in the gamasott (iron pot) design on a package, letting people see the contents of the bag - everything has been made with great consideration for the consumers.

Popular in American H-marts, Expanding Business from New York to Los Angeles

“Rice Well” is sold in the US in H-marts. In the first year, KOREA RICE BIO INC. was able to make US$1 million in sales of its 150g bags of “Rice Well” (the price for 1 bag is $4.00). The popularity of the product soon reached LA, and now the nurungji are selling in LA H-marts, too. Currently, the company is preparing to start exports to Hong Kong and Germany by holding promotional events. According to President Jeong, “KOREA RICE BIO INC. is going to make inroads to Japanese and European markets based on our experience in the US. We are conducting a research about flavors popular in each nation, so that we can make nurungji that match well with the preferences of local consumers. We will do our best to expand the exports.”
