Exports of Korean seaweed passed the US$100 million mark last year, showing a strong upward trend in the overseas market. So far, the dried Korean seaweed distributed abroad has mostly been seasoned seaweed (for side dishes) and seaweed for sushi. Korean seaweed is popular not only in the countries with a food culture similar to Korea, such as Japan and China, but also in Southeast Asian countries and Taiwan. Since the consumers around the world have learned that seaweed is nutritious and low in calories, the demand for Korean seaweed has been steadily increasing. This is particularly the case with the Americas and Europe where the consumers had previously been unfamiliar with the product.
Seaweed is generally grown on farms. While growing, foreign substances may stunt the growth of seaweed, so the farmers need to at least use a minimal amount of organic acids or mineral acids to remove foreign matters and increase the production. Although the foreign substances can be removed in other ways, it would take a lot more effort, and anyway the output would be significantly reduced. For this reason, the majority of seaweed production companies use organic or mineral acids when growing seaweed. But there is one company that does not use acids and produces seaweed only in environmentally friendly ways. That is Jangheung Musan Gim Co., Ltd.

In contrast to other seaweed exporters, Jangheung Musan Gim Co., Ltd. is the first company to be managed only by fishermen. As shareholders, they participate in all steps of the process: production, processing, distribution, and sales of “Jangheung Acid-Free Seaweed.” The company has obtained a number of international organic certifications such as JAS (from Japan), USDA (from the United States), and the IFOAM. Receiving the Grand Prize in the “2011 Brand Awards of Korean Marine Products” further boosted the product’s popularity. It gave the consumers more confidence in the quality and safety of Jangheung Acid-Free Seaweed.
Mr. Song Myung-sub, the president of Jangheung Musan Gim Co., Ltd. explains: “We, fishermen go through many hardships in the production of eco-friendly seaweed. However, we want to offer overseas consumers Korean organic marine products. This is also the reason why we’ve been trying so hard to acquire international certifications.”
All seaweed products of Jangheung Musan Gim Co., Ltd. are produced through long-term contracts with growers. As producers and shareholders at the same time, the fishermen prepare and sort seaweed to order according to strict standards. What’s more, a CCTV keeps a close watch on every farm 24 hours a day in order to prevent the usage of any organic or mineral acids. If the quality of a product becomes an issue, the farm that has produced it abides by the association’s principle that it has to leave the enterprise. This makes the fishermen very careful in securing the quality and reliability of their products.

The main items of the company include dried seaweed, roasted seaweed, seasoned seaweed, and seaweed gift sets. These eco-friendly products are being prepared to enter the international organic food market. Jangheung Musan Gim Co., Ltd. plans to first introduce its premium seaweed products to consumers of the high-income bracket in Japan and Greater China. It is now holding various promotional events in high-end department stores, big supermarkets, and organic food stores. In the United States, Jangheung Acid-Free Seaweed is going to be sold in organic food stores such as Whole Foods from the latter half of this year. The premium eco-friendly Korean seaweed will also appear on store shelves shortly in the Russian market and in Europe, where the food safety standards are particularly rigid.
The prices for the products are about two times those of regular seaweed products.
Mr. Song says, “among Korean seaweed products, Jangheung Acid-Free Seaweed is of the top grade. We consider it our primary goal to deliver to our overseas customers the taste of nature as it is, without anything artificial.”
