Life Master: Roasted Seaweed Powder
Just Sprinkle over Rice and Tasty Rice Balls are Ready
Rice balls are an easy-to-make, simple food, and the product “Life Master: Roasted Seaweed Powder” has been developed with rice balls in mind. The product enjoys particular success with Japanese consumers, who often eat rice balls. But the balls made with the roasted seaweed powder are quite different from the Japanese “onigiri.”Onigiri is rice balls wrapped in roasted seaweed, while “Life Master” lets one make rice balls by simply sprinkling the powder over the dish and mixing it in. Such an easy method of cooking rice balls is the likely key to the popularity of the product with Japanese consumers.
Generally, seasoned seaweed contains salt and some flavorings for a better taste. “Life Master: Roasted Seaweed Powder,” however, uses abundant natural ingredients such as shrimp, onion, and shiitake mushrooms instead of seasonings. Thus, in addition to taste and nutrition, the manufacturers considered consumer health. Moreover, as the item uses solar salt instead of refined salt, it is low in sodium. Yet another merit of the roasted seaweed powder is that it can add a strong flavor not only to rice balls but to dishes like noodles and soups as well.
The product comes in three different tastes: shrimp, curry, and nut. “Shrimp Roasted Seaweed Powder”contains grinded shrimp that gives it a wonderful spicy shrimp fragrance. “Curry Roasted Seaweed Powder”is good for consumers who enjoy eating curry. And “Nut Roasted Seaweed Powder,” with highly nutritional nuts, such as walnuts and almonds, has been developed as a snack to accompany drinks.
Park Hyang-hee, the CEO of HANBAEK FOOD CO., LTD., which produces the item, is known to the general public in Korea through the TV program “Life Master”of the SBS broadcasting company. For over a decade, the program has been telling viewers impressive stories of experts who, with unceasing passion and commitment, have attained great proficiency in their fields. Ms. Park appeared in the program as “the master of roasting seaweed” - in the blink of an eye, she turned seaweed eight times and toasted it over rocks 360℃ hot. Since then, she has become famous throughout Korea as an expert of roasting seaweed. The exported items even have Ms. Park’s caricature attached to the label.
According to Ms. Park, “Many Japanese tourists who visited Korea during the Japanese holidays called “Golden Week” bought our items. Thanks to word-of-mouth among the tourists, we started exporting the roasted seaweed powder to Japan and Indonesia this year and have a plan to develop other markets - China, Taiwan, Southeast Asian countries, and the USA - in the near future.”
