‘When Green tea Meets Squid’

Green tea squid, produced by Segyero Oxalic Acid Co., Ltd., is made of skinless squid and green tea. The reason why the squid’s skin is removed is to reduce cholesterol and to make green tea well-soaked into the squid. Through the process, the squid became softer and tasty without having the fishy smell of squid.
To make green tea squid the skins of the squids are removed two times: the outer skin with a machine and the inner layer of skin by hand. This takes place right after they are captured. Before the process, the squid is cut open and the inner organs removed. After washing the skinless squid with clean water, they are soaked it in cold green tea for ten minutes and then dried it with a cold-wind-drying-machine that emits far infrared ray. After this they are ready to be packed and to go to market.

Unlike other dried squid that should be roasted before eating because it is too hard to chew, green tea squid doesn’t have to worry about that because it is much softer through soaking into green tea and the skins being removed. Furthermore, there is no need to worry about the smell of the squid that many foreigners hate. So for someone who avoids eating squid because of its smell, green tea squid is the best solution. The technique of making green tea squid was developed by Segyero Oxalic Acid Co., Ltd. and Institute of Hadong Green Tea last year. All the green tea leaves for the squid is organic and from Gyeonsangnam-do Hadong-gun. The company has applied for patents for dried squid, half dried squid, and roasted squid.

Segyero Oxalic Acid Co., Ltd.’s green tea squid is the principal product of Jinhae. At the same time it is one of the recommended products of Gyeonsangnam-do, and it won a prize ‘2009 Korea Excellent Products.’ With a proven quality taste, it has been gathering attentions from buyers.

Green tea squid has started to be exported to America via exporting companies like H-mart. For exporting, new packaging have been created and the company has been considering making individual packages for more long-term storage. There is a cute squid character on the package for the eyes of those Westerners accustomed to thinking the squid an evil animal.

Gang Jung-soo, President of Segyero Oxalic Acid Co., Ltd. explained: “We made green tea squid getting the idea from the Japanese who remove a fishy smell with green tea. We are going to make seafood processes products using green tea and show people how good Korean seafoods are. New factories and facilities will be soon set up for this purpose”
