There is a Korean traditional food called ‘Cheonggukjang’(soup prepared with fermented soybeans) that is similar to Natto from Japan. The way to eat Cheonggukjang and Natto is quite different: Cheonggukjang is for soup but Natto is not for boiling.
Cheonggukjang contains variety of nutrients such as vitamin B1, B2, B6, B12, calcium, potassium, and saponin. So there is a saying: “One spoonful of Cheonggukjang for everyday is better than a restorative.” Recently it has been found that Cheonggukjang has an effect on obesity; however, the bad smell outs many people off eating it.
Saengiwon, a Cheonggukjang restaurant located in Insadong in Seoul, offer to its customer smell-free Cheonggukjangjjigae (stew) that is from Matdongsan in Ganwoldo in Chungcheong-nam-do. Undoubtedly then Saenggiwon is the best place to eat Cheonggukjang anyone who cannot take its unpleasant smell.
Gweon Gi-ju, owner-chef of this restaurant, who has managed a Hanjeongsik restaurant nearby for eighteen years, opened Saenggiwon with her know-how for cooking and managing a restaurant.
