Barley with Added Mulberry Mushrooms and Mandarin Remains
Product Good for Patients, Dieting and General Health

A Korean company called 'Dongeui MediTech Co., Ltd.' (DMTCL) has developed a special kind of barley by adding mulberry mushrooms and the remains after making mandarin orange juice. The production method involves adding the extract to barley first and then cultivating the mushroom mycelia on the grains for 45 to 60 days. The mushroom is well known to have a strong anti-cancerous effect, and mandarin oranges control the oxidization of substances in the body. This product is marketed under the brand name 'Mulberry Mushroom Barley'.
In Korea there have been released onto the market many kinds of processed products containing mulberry mushrooms. And they include ramyen, rice, tonic drinks, alcoholic drinks, and cosmetics. But it is the first time for a product with added mulberry mushrooms and a mandarin orange extract to be developed. Mr. Shaki Lee, the president of DMTCL, recently stated, concerning the motivation for developing the product, that some old Korean medicine books mention the good effects of mixing barley with mulberry mushrooms.
There are 2 types of the special barley product: one is in the form of unbroken polished grains, and the other in powder form. The former is for adding to rice when boiling, and the latter can be mixed in water or milk for drinking. Both kinds have found Japanese markets.
Company Run by Professors
Unlike most other companies, DMTCL was founded by professors and is run mostly by them. In 2002 some professors at Dongui University in Busan were conducting research on the development of certain biotechnology. And they gradually developed the idea of establishing a firm in which such technology could be employed in making food products. The first product they developed was the special barley product.
The barley and mandarin oranges used for making the product are obtained from the unpolluted Jeju Island. And the barley is not the usual variety which is used in mixing with rice, but that used in beer making. With regard to this fact Mr. Lee explained that this variety of barley has a better nutty taste. Also the added remains from making mandarin orange juice help the barley to acquire a tender texture.
Health Drinks Made with Natural Ingredients
DMTCL has also released 2 kinds of health drink onto the market: 'Dongui Longevity Drink-Gold' and 'Natural Beauty-Ya'.
'Dongui Longevity Drink-Gold' is made by adding Korea Insam, licorice, peony roots , mulberry mushrooms, and other medicinally effective ingredients to sipjeon daebotang, a kind of traditional liquid medicine.
'Natural Beauty-Ya', made with 35 types of enzymes obtained from vegetables, has notable effects in aiding dieting. In an experiment, conducted with 40 overweight subjects by the Oriental Medicine Research Institute of Dongui University, it was observed that regular consumption of the product for 3 months had decreased their weight by 27.5% on average.
Apart from the existing products, DMTCL is planning to develop many more health foods and drinks by employing oriental medicine, western medicine, and life science, or combining them.
