Are you concerned about your health? Then it is recommended that you try Korean pears. For ages in Korea pears have been eaten on their own, added to some dishes and also used as a medicinal ingredient. Several ancient thesauri on medicine, including ‘Bon-cho-yeon-ui’, ‘Bon-cho-gang-mok’ and ‘Sin-nong-bon-cho-gyeong-so’, mention the good effects of pears against coughs, phlegm and constipation. They also mention that pears neutralize toxic substances in the body. Through modern scientific research these effects have also been proven.
Pear’s Anti-cancerous Effects
In many countries there are various fried and grilled dishes. The problem is that they can cause cancer. In the frying or grilling process such cancerous substances as dioxin and benzo (a) pyrene are created in the food, specially from the burned parts. And when the food is consumed into the body, it has difficulty in getting rid of the substances through urination. If the substances cannot be eliminated from the body quickly and stay inside, they could cause cancer. Fortunately, however, it has been discovered through many kinds of scientific research that pears help carry the harmful substances out of the body quickly.
One such piece of research was conducted by a team at Sookmyung women? University. In the experiment both mice and humans were used as subjects. And both groups revealed that pears help to remove dioxin and benzo (a) pyrene from the body. Also in an experiment with cells it was observed that both fresh and heated pear purees prevent the mutation of cells to some extent. The research suggests that pears help prevent the occurrence of cancer related to burned food and smoking as well.
Traditionally in Korea there are some grilled dishes cooked with added pears or eaten with the fruit. Among such dishes are certain kinds of bulgogi (grilled marinated meat). The added pears go well with the meat, and it can now be said that they also play a role in preventing cancer which can be caused by the grilled meat.
Pears Help You Stay Young Longer
Most people want to stay young. In ancient times some people used to dream of finding an elixir of life. And modern people are apt to depend on medicine and good food. Pears can be one of the things which help people stay young longer.
In a medical sense ageing is caused by the oxidization of substances in the body. Decreasing the oxidization helps people to stay young longer. According to the results of research conducted by the Sookmyung women? University team, fresh pear puree decreases the amount of MDA(Malondialdehyde), which causes oxidization in the body. And when it is heated at 120℃ or a higher temperature, the puree creates more of the anti-oxidization component called polyphenol.
Good Quality Gyeonggi Pears Find Larger Foreign Markets
Gyeonggi Province takes up one third of the export amount of Korean pears. And some of the major production areas are Hwaseong, Yangju, Pyeongtaek, and Anseong. The geographic features and climate in these areas are very suitable for the growth of pears.
In 2005 altogether more than 5 kilotons of pears were exported from those areas to Taiwan and America. And owing to sales promotion events arranged jointly by the Gyeonggi Local Government and the aT (Korea Agro-Fisheries Trade Corporation), larger markets for the pears were recently developed in Taiwan, Vietnam and Japan. This month similar sales promotion events are being held in Dutch fruit wholesale markets, Carrefour stores in France, Tesco stores in Britain, and in Metro stores in Germany.
Cultivation Training and Safety Checks
In order to help local cultivators produce good quality pears, the Gyeonggi Local Government and the aT regularly arrange joint training sessions for them. In July 2005 they invited Mr. Yokuosio, an expert in pear cultivation, to one of the training sessions. And he provided a lot of useful information on the cultivation of high quality pears.
If a farm wants to export its pears to America, the orchard has first to undergo strict checking of the environment by a quarantine officer. And there is also strict checking of the harvested pears: concerning safety matters related to the residue of agricultural chemicals. And the farm has to keep a daily work record on the fruit production.
