Health Food Using Korean Agriproducts Opening up the Export Market
There is a Korean company making health foods using domestic medicinal herbs that is carving out new markets at home and abroad. This firm is Cho-Dang Agricultural Company located in Geumsan in South Chungcheong Province that produces teas and pills using curative plants such as ginseng and Dung-geul-re (Polygonatum odoratum var. pluriflorum). The ingredients the company uses range from mulberry leaves, kelps, safflower seeds, perennial Artemisia, balloonflower, Ogapy (Acanthopanax sessiliflorum Seeman), Siberian chrysanthemum, to persimmon leaves, adlai, Dang-gwi (Angelica gigas Nakai), and Japanese elm. Now the Cho-Dang is securing its position as a specialty company in ginseng and health food.
Hwang Yoo-yeon, the CEO of the Cho-Dang Agricultural Company, said: “When the government selected our region - that is our specialized community as representing a model business venture on the recommendation of the Geumsan Agricultural Technology Center - we focused on stabilizing our shipping, creating added value, and increasing the income of our farmers through processing herbs.”
The products of the Cho-Dang come in the diverse forms of capsule, tablet, pill, and tea bag. As for the pills, the Cho-Dang makes them from Perennial Artemisia, mulberry leaves, kelp, safflower seeds, balloonflower, Ogapy, Japanese elm, Siberian chrysanthemum, and garlic. The numerous teas the Cho-Dang produces include Red ginseng-Eleuthero tea, Red-ginseng-Dung-geul-re tea, Dang-gwi tea, adlay tea, persimmon leave tea, Du-chung (Eucommia ulmoides) tea, mulberry leave tea, Dung-geul-re tea, etc.
Of special note is the company’s red ginseng extract pouch that has a high degree of purity with the alcohol extracted. Also the Cho-Dang produces Heot-gae-na-mu (Hovenia dulcis) pill, tea bag, and pouch. The company is consigned to produce and supply popular products like corn floss tea which recently have been dominating the beverage industry in Korea. In October the company will release its new product - capsulated red ginseng snack.
The Cho-Dang distributes its products through sale, consignment production, and original equipment manufacturing (OME). The company also exports its red ginseng-hippocampus pill, Dung-geul-re tea, and red ginseng powder to Japan and the United States. After the export of Dong-gyu-ja tea, coarse ginseng tea, Nu-e (silkworm), and red ginseng products in 1997, the export of the company’s products marked a turning point.
The Cho-Dang has secured its competitiveness through using excellent domestic ingredients, safe hygiene and up to date technology which meet the criteria of the Korea Food & Drug Administration (KFDA). In particular, to ensure secure food safety, the company has contracted GAP (Good Agricultural Practices) cultivation with farmers this year. This includes the 12,066m² (3,650 pyeong) of Hwang-jeong (kind of Dung-geul-re) cultivation which is traceable to production. Next year the company will add the Dung-geul-re cultivation.
Using its own technology the Cho-Dang has developed its products and improved its packaging system. Notably, the company obtained the patent (No. 0346248) for its green ginseng vacuum wrapping in 2002. In addition, the company registered its working plants with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (No. 14912392862) in 2003 and acquired ISO14001 certification from the Small and Medium Business Administration (SMBA) as well as clean place of business certification from the Korea Occupational Safety & Health Agency (KOSHA).
