Hessare, which means ‘to grow ripe with abundant sunlight,’ is the co-brand name of peaches developed by a coalition of four groups in North Chungcheong Province: Janghowon and East Gyeonggi Fruit groups, Gamgok, and Eumseong Nonghyup (Agricultural Cooperative).
Some 2,000 farms in the regions in Icheon in Gyeonggi Province and Eumseong in North Chungcheong Province are producing reliable and safe Hessare peaches using environmentally-friendly agricultural methods. Hessare peaches boast an excellent taste and are replete with nutrients. These peaches, big in size, are cultivated in spacious hilly areas. They contain high-levels of Brix, vitamins, and minerals as a result of using stevia (Stevia rebaudiana), a perennial herb in the Asteraceae family that has 300 times more sugar content than that of refined sugar.
Peaches, from olden times, have been known as ‘the elixir fruit of life’and were believed to be enjoyed by supernatural hermits in utopia. On a mundane level peaches can be a good antidote for toxins like the dreaded nicotine so they are beneficial to smokers. In addition, peaches have a lot of asparagines that can help to relieve a hangover. Full of vitamins A and B and with a high-pectin content peaches are good for constipation to boot. Peaches also help those who suffer from high blood pressure and a heart disease as they have a high potassium content. Among summer fruits only peaches have a warm property and help to restore energy. Therefore, when visiting patients in the hospital, peaches - canned - are an excellent gift.
Hessare peache, the leading variety in Korea, come in three kinds: Mibackdo, Kawanakajima Hakuto (Cheonjungdo in Korean), and Hwangdo. Of this trio the Mibackdo is produced with the label of ‘Hessare Premium’; it claims a high quality with a clear color and over 13 Brix. Through the use of environmentally-friendly agricultural methods that keep chemical fertilizers at a minimum, GAP (Good Agricultural Practices) certification, and a strict sorting system, only safe and A-grade fruits are grown and released onto the market.
The Hessare Fruit Joint Corporation employs modern scientific equipment such as low-temperature storage and precoolers. And to increase the efficiency of physical distribution, the corporation has changed the packing unit from 5kg to 4.5kg. Added to this, the corporation has almost completed its manual for peach cultivation based on the existing know-how. Since precipitation and the amount of sunlight affect peach cultivation most, the corporation is considering how to secure as much sunlight as possible. It also plans to find ways to increase the preservation capacity level for export and to develop the quality of the peaches by finding ways to make them clearer and appear more beautiful.
Lee Yong-yun, the head of the Hessare Fruit Joint Corporation, said: “Through differentiation, we will make Hessare a prestigious fruit brand. We are reviewing our foray into the Chinese market focusing on middle-class consumers there; and we will resume the severed export to Taiwan.”
